According to a new study that was presented at the virtual meeting of the American society for nutrition, there are more than 25 percent of children and adolescents consumed calories "leer" and come from added sugar and fat. Among the main sources of empty calories, soft drinks and fruit drinks, biscuits, Pizza and ice cream.
In comparison to 2007/2008 to 2015/2016 has been observed a downward trend in the proportion of empty calories, which was mainly due to a decrease in sugar consumption from soft drinks and fruit drinks. Nevertheless, consumed by children and adolescents of all studied age groups, more than 25 percent of their energy from empty calories, the percentage increased with age. Older adolescents were empty calories especially from foods such as Pizza and sweet pastries, while they were drinks in younger children more fruit and Milk.
The scientists propose against the unhealthy diet measures, such as placement of nutrition knowledge on children and adolescents stronger marketing of healthier food, different product composition and a better access to healthy food in case of reduced availability of less healthy foods.
In a follow-up study, the researchers want to investigate how the most important energy and calorie sources differ according to family income, and whether the addition of fats and sugars in drinks affects the calorie intake in children and adolescents.
