Bruising for No Reason? It Could Be Due to These Medications

Bruising, where blood gets trapped under the skin, usually happens from trauma—like banging your knee against a table. Now, easy bruising without trauma is a different story. It could be due to health conditions like a shortage of platelets, bleeding disorders, and deficiencies in vitamin C, vitamin K or protein. Or, more commonly, it could be the result of a medication or supplement side effect.

If you notice five or more bruises larger than 1 cm in diameter, it’s worth a visit to your doc for a check-up and a review of your medication list. These six types of drugs are common offenders.

1) Antiplatelet medications

2) NSAID pain relievers

3) Anticoagulants

4) Steroids

5) Antibiotics

6) Antidepressants

Can supplements cause easy bruising too?

Taking dietary supplements like fish oil, garlic, ginkgo and vitamin E may also lead to easy bruising. These substances block platelets from forming clots, which would normally stop bleeding. It’s a good reminder to run supplements by your doc before you start taking any.
