Vitamin D functions like a hormone, and every single cell in the body has a receptor for it. The body makes vitamin D from cholesterol when the skin is exposed to sunlight. People who live near the equator and get frequent sun exposure are less likely to be deficient, as their skin produces enough vitamin D to satisfy their bodies needs. For people who don’t regularly get their sunshine fix however, their risk of deficiency is higher.
Most people don’t realise that they’re deficient, as symptoms are generally quite subtle. The symptoms may not be easily recognised, even if they are having a significantly negative effect on the body.
Feeling a pain in this body part is a sign of deficiency of vitamin D.
Vitamin D helps maintain bone health in a number of ways. It also improves the body’s absorption of calcium.
If a person feels pain in their lower back, it could be a warning sign of vitamin D deficiency.
Bone pain and a pain in the lower back may be signs of inadequate vitamin D levels in the blood. Having low blood levels of vitamin D may be a cause of the pain felt in the lower region of the back.
In a study with the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, the relationship between vitamin D deficiency and pain severity in patients with low back pain was investigated.
The study concluded that the deficiency of vitamin D can cause bone and muscle pain.
The study determined that the severity of pain increased in patients with lower back pain as the deficiency of vitamin D increased.
For this reason, the study recommended that patients with lower back pain should evaluate their levels of vitamin D in their body.
In another study, the association between nonspecific skeletal pain and vitamin D deficiency was analysed. The study noted that vitamin D deficient patients were nearly twice as likely to experience bone pain in their legs, ribs or joints compared to those with blood levels in the normal range.
Vitamin D deficiency is suspiciously common in people with chronic pain and is more common in patients with specific kinds of chronic pain. Most notably is fibromyalgia which is a common misdiagnosis.
The symptoms include muscle aching, fatigue and weakness, depression, lower pain threshold, and poor exercise recovery.
Other symptoms of vitamin D deficiency include getting sick more often, having more infections, fatigue and tiredness, depression, slow healing wounds, bone loss, hair loss, and muscle pain.
Thankfully, Vitamin D deficiency can be fixed through either the foods you eat or supplements.
Children from the age of one and adults need 10 micrograms of vitamin D a day
Foods including fatty fish, orange juice, soy milk, beef liver, cheese, and egg yolks which all have high levels of vitamin D.
It may be difficult to get enough vitamin D from food and sunshine alone, supplementation is sometimes the better choice.
Vitamin D supplements are cheap, safe, and effective.
The NHS added: “Babies up to the age of one year need 8.5 micrograms of vitamin D a day. Children from the age of one and adults need 10 micrograms of vitamin D a day.
“This includes pregnant and breastfeeding women, and people at risk of vitamin D deficiency.”
